Wild HareHare was introduced to New Zealand for sport and was traditionally hunted on horse back (this was known as 'the hunt'). They are largely solitary animals or live in pairs, and have a large home range.
Wild hare meat is generally darker and more chunky than rabbit meat, and boasts an exquisite flavour. Although it is small in size, there is still plenty of meat on the bone. The male hare, called a buck, ranges in length from 48cm to 75cm and can weigh anywhere between 2.5kg and 7 kg. The female hare is called a doe. |
